iPhone 16 Pro Max 80% Charge Limit: One Year Later, Was It Worth It?

Interesting post over on MacRumors. A gated feature, limited to newer phones, I have wondered why features like this don't just trickle down to older devices.

As it turns out, perhaps it's not actually that useful. As I alluded to in this weeks post, the battery in my iPhone 14 Pro is not in a great place, currently showing as 77% max capacity. That's after 3 years. Despite loving the always-on display, I effectively turned the feature off a year ago to only show the date and time. In the past 6 months I actually turned it off completely to help the battery out.

The thermal architecture of the new Pro phones may help with heat issues but I'm of the opinion that MagSafe is not worth it from a thermal point of view. With a case in the way, it's probably worse and also if using a non-MagSafe Qi charger where the camera bump/plateau can cause gaps between the two bits of hardware that make wireless charging work.

Strangely, 3 years of the iPhone 14 Pro has gotten me to roughly the same battery level as 5 years with my iPhone 8 Plus.
