Apple + Porsche CarPlay analysis and redesign

While I don't hate what Apple and Porsche have come up with with the latter's integration of CarPlay, John LePore's redesign is undoubtedly better.

First Vehicles With Next-Generation Apple CarPlay Announced Ahead of 2024 Launch

The next generation of CarPlay was announced over a year ago, and while I think it does look great, I thought it would be more likely to serve as some inspiration for car manufacturers... I just didn't see how any car manufacturer would buy into it.

Looks like I was wrong and it will be in cars as early as next year. If you can afford one of them.

I am actually a big fan of Porsche's cars. I think externally, it would be hard to pick a bad looking car they've ever made. Maybe they don't all stand the test of time, but overall I would say they deliver hit after hit after hit. When car shopping, I did briefly look at Porsche as an option. Unrealistic, but no harm in window shopping until I looked inside. The instrument clusters for modern Porsches are not at the level they should be. Trying to marry their analogue heritage with a digital future hasn't worked well in my opinion.

CarPlay, weirdly, appears to be trying to do the same but maybe a tiny bit more successfully than Porsche have done. On the previews, Aston Martin's implementation looks more in keeping with their brand than their own digital instrument clusters.

Alicia Keys: 20 Years of 'The Diary of Alicia Keys'

This sent me down a rabbit hole, listening to songs by Alicia Keys that she's released over the past 20 years.

The one that really got me, that I hadn't heard in over a decade, was You Don't Know My Name from the album she's talking about in this video. Along with If I Ain't Got You, a couple of truly timeless hits.

Fallout Teaser Trailer

I'm aware of the Fallout games, but I've never played them. This reminds me of The Last Of Us but nuclear. Interested to see what this is like and lots of famous and familiar faces show up during the teaser.

iPhone 15 Camera, Album Cover

This is a great ad for a feature that I bet a lot of people don't know about, although it doesn't specifically point out it needs to be one taken with depth information. Pre-iPhone 15 Pro, that was just a Portrait Mode photo but now the iPhone will detect these scenarios and capture the data anyway for manipulating later.

When the feature was announced alongside the iPhone 15 Pro, it came across as a feature for only that device but turns out it works retrospectively with photos that have the depth info. I tried on photos taken with the iPhone 8 Plus, which has Portrait Mode but no LiDAR sensor. Nothing changed there, but Portrait Mode photos on my iPhone 14 Plus worked a treat.

I know I'm asking for too much now, but it would be great if you could specify two points. Sometimes you want the depth of field at the back but the object is bulbous and so choosing a single spot doesn't cover the situation adequately and then adjusting the depth via the ƒ button just brings everything into focus when it's just a large subject you're trying to focus on.
